When Someone Dies: What You Need to Do With Their Estate

Losing someone you love is hard enough. The last thing you want to worry about is paperwork but unfortunately, there are things that need to be taken care of. If you’ve never dealt with a deceased estate before, it can feel like a lot.

The good news? You don’t have to figure it out alone, and it doesn’t have to be as complicated as it first appears.

What is a deceased estate?

A “deceased estate” is a term for everything a person owned when they passed away — their money, property, belongings, and any debts. Someone (usually named in the will) is responsible for sorting all of this out. That person is called the executor.

What actually needs to happen?

There are several things that typically need to be done:

  • Tell the bank, super fund, and government agencies (like Centrelink or the ATO) that the person has passed away
  • Sort out any tax returns and final tax obligations
  • Apply for probate if needed (this is a legal process that confirms the will is valid)
  • Distribute what was left to the right people, as per the will
  • Keep records of everything you do along the way

Each of these steps has its own paperwork, deadlines, and requirements. It’s easy to feel unsure about where to start or worry about making a mistake.

It’s more than just admin

On top of the practical tasks, most people are also dealing with grief, family conversations, and the pressure of wanting to do the right thing by the person who passed. That’s a lot to carry at once.

It’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed, or to need help.
